Trauma Therapy for Recent Traumatic Events

When something overwhelming happens—a car accident, medical emergency, assault, natural disaster, or any other frightening event—your body and mind can stay stuck in survival mode long after the danger has passed. You may feel jumpy, on edge, disconnected, or unable to stop replaying what happened. These reactions are common, but you don’t have to handle them alone.

At EMDR Knoxville, I offer a specialized EMDR protocol for recent traumatic events, providing early intervention that helps the nervous system settle before symptoms become long-term.

When to Seek Support

I work with clients who have recently experienced:

  • Car accidents or near-misses

  • Shootings or community violence

  • Medical or surgical trauma

  • Natural disasters (tornadoes, floods, fires, etc.)

  • Workplace incidents

  • Sudden loss, emergencies, or other acute stressors

You don’t need to wait months to get help. In fact, early treatment often leads to faster, more complete recovery.

How Therapy Helps

Using the EMDR ASSYST protocol, I help your brain process what happened so you can:

  • Reduce intrusive thoughts and memories

  • Calm the fight-or-flight response

  • Sleep better

  • Rebuild a sense of safety and control

  • Prevent the development of chronic PTSD symptoms

This approach is gentle, structured, and designed specifically for fresh trauma, so you don’t have to retell the entire story in detail.

Typically, clients are encouraged to complete this type of therapy in 1-3 sessions scheduled as closely together as possible.

Group Support for Shared Traumatic Events

For groups who have gone through a traumatic event together—coworkers, classmates, friends, family members, or community groups—I also provide group trauma sessions.
These sessions help:

  • Normalize reactions

  • Build connection and emotional support

  • Reduce guilt, shock, or isolation

  • Process the event in a guided, safe environment

Group EMDR-based interventions are especially effective when a whole group has been impacted by the same incident.

A Practical, Grounded Approach

My style is straightforward and compassionate. The goal is to help you regain your footing quickly—so you can get back to your life with clarity, stability, and confidence.

If you’ve recently gone through something traumatic very recently and can’t shake the impact, you’re not “overreacting.” Your nervous system just needs some support.
You don’t have to navigate this alone.
